How do Heat Banks work?
Geist Europe heat test banks allow generation of a known thermal load and airflow. Therefore it is possible to pre-set the anticipated output of the server equipment to check that the CRAC (computer room air conditioning) unit can handle the load.
We offer three basic load test models:
- 3U rack mounted x 3kW heat bank
- 3U rack mounted x 4kW heat bank
- 4U rack mounted x 6kW heat bank
In addition, we also offer a portable 18kW heat bank and, we can also build server simulators of varying output to customer requirements.
The airflow through the Heat Banks is front to rear with switches varying the amount of active kilowatts. Each unit has a detachable lead, so a range of lead lengths and plug types are also available. Popular examples include: 13A to Neutrik Lead, 32A to Wieland Lead and 3phase 63A to 3 x 32A Single Phase Splitter Box.

Inexpensive testing of expensive equipment
Geist's inexpensive load test units – available to rent or purchase - ensure that any potential cooling shortcomings are exposed before they become issues. Server shutdowns can be caused by hot spots and can also reduce the expected operational lifetime of the equipment, but they can be avoided with proper testing; saving significant expense both in terms of downtime and also damaged reputation.
Check redundancy requirements
Additionally, there may be a requirement to ensure that there is enough redundancy to add another rack or even another server to the existing installation. With Geist Europe heat banks the CRAC unit can be tested to ensure it can handle the increased thermal activity, prior to rack and/or server installation.
